Earth is rotating at a speed of about 1100 miles per hour. If our planet suddenly stopped rotating, the atmosphere would still be in motion at that speed. The atmosphere would be moving so fast it would literally sweep the land masses clear of anything not anchored to bedrock, this would mean rocks, soil, trees, buildings, people and animals. All would be swept up into the atmosphere.

If you're standing near the North or South Pole, you probably wouldn't notice any change.

If you're standing near the Equator, your motion perpendicular to the earth's axis will stop. You'll feel this deceleration from 1000 miles per hour and back if it happens in a short time. Stand on a scale and you'll weigh slightly less.

Look at the sun, moon, and stars, and you won't see them 'move'. But then, you wouldn't see much movement in 5 minutes anyway. But most of the atmosphere would keep spinning, so you'd see some really strange changes in the winds for that short time.

If it were to be a gradual stop, everyone would feel as if they were in a car that was braking hard and the places near the west coasts of the world would get wet. Also, the areas in the daylight would get a bit warmer than normal. Other than that, probably nothing except people wondering what happened. Gravity, time and the atmosphere would not be affected as some may have suggested.

Gravitity is from earths mass not spinning motion , everything would continue to move in direction of spin though earth had stopped causeing massive destruction .

Of course, this can't happen, but if it did, everything not attached would go flying off to the east, parallel to the surface of the Earth. The speed would depend upon your latitude. Only the people at the poles would be safe. You wouldn't go flying off into space because the 1000 mph maximum (at the equator) isn't enough to overcome gravity, which would still be present.

time would stand completely still for 5 minutes and resume when the earth starts spinning again

wow so many things will happen, because rotation of the earth causes day and night, there wont be equal day and night, the force of the earth will make the nine planet that revolve around it to stop revolving and the weather will be altered too,a particular weather condition might keep occuring and worst still, human beings, plants and animals might cease to exist.

Massive chaos. First, I think we would all get incredibly dizzy. Second, would have a major impact on weather - who knows what would happen. Plus, major activities for scientists to study...they'd be trying to figure out why & would it happen again. Could create some new science jobs???

Interesting question.

Gravity would stop, we would all float off of the earth and it may explode, have a nice day!
