it depends on where the weeds are! In your lawn you should use a hose end product type sprayer with any brand name that the active ingredient is 2-4-D. If in planters or shrub beds etc. Manual removal is best. If in areas as driveway cracks etc. round up is just fine. Always treat these ares at least 24 hours before any rain or watering to avoid run-off or leaching. And also apply when there is little wind and the temp in your area will reach 75 or higher as the chemicals will absorb into the foliage to give you the best kill. Once you have applied then get some type of pre-emergent to place among the desirable as to prevent future out breaks.

A home remedy that I found has worked is table salt. Believe it or not it really works, but you have to be careful. Sprinkle the salt in the area that you want the weeds gone from and the salt in the soil prevents them from growing back. However this is not a remedy for weeds growing directly in your yard. It is more suitable for the cracks of your driveway, sidewalks, and patio bases. Remember if you use this nothing will grow where you put it. Also you will have to readminister as needed...usually after a big rain.

If you are killing them and they're along rocks or a fence line you don't want to cut near, as long as you don't want to grow anything there for a long time (but this includes new weeds) pool shock is one of the best things out there. Roundup sucks next to it and a little goes a long way.

Ask them nicely to leave?? LOL
Honestly "kill" and "safely" don't really go together do they? :)
Handpicking each one and getting the entire root is the safest for the environment and your surrounding grass.
