On average (even though it's not a crime, many states still have laws on the books), flag desecration is reported less than once a year across the US.

In the United States it is not illegal to "desecrate" the flag. Flag burning and things of that nature are protected under the First Amendment as Freedom of Speech. It's considered a form of political protest.
