You just walk right up to your boss and tell him/her. If you are forthright about it, it shows you have what it takes to come to the point and want to come up in the world. That is what a boss wants from an employee.........ambition and guts.

it depends, is it a job in the company you are working for now, like a supervisor role or something like that? Or is it just another different job that you want to go for?
I would ask my boss if it is ok if I put his/her name down as a reference and then if they say yes just go and apply for the job. You don't HAVE to tell them about it. Just tell them if you get the job and you decide to take it.
