The song is a 50's style ballard - at least it starts like that - but has an insane chorus where the singer sounds most demented, screaming "DOWN CAME THE RRR -RAIIIN!!!!"
I think but i'm not sure that it's by "Mister Murray"... i've only heard this song once, many years ago, and haven't had any luck in finding it anywhere... so if you know where i can find it, or better still, have a copy of it..... i'd be a very happy bunny.

Yes I remember it. It was written and sung by Mitch Murray in 1964. After the "Down Came the Rain line" comes a falsetto "the thunder and light...neeeeeng, down came the rain". Goodness knows where you'd get a copy. It has been played on the BBC Radio 2 programme, "sounds of the sixties". If you log on to the BBC website and then access that programme you can send a message to them. Try asking where they got their copy from!

"Leader of the Pack" was my favorite. I also think the genre served an important purpose. It reminded teenagers of the grief caused by careless actions. All things considered, that was a lesson well worth teaching. Those songs may have saved lives. My favorite sad maudlin tune that does not quite fit in that group, is the Ballad of the Edmund Fitzgerald. A lot of good lives have been lost in the Great Lakes.
