What are they snobbish about, were their ancestors blue-collar criminals perhaps, deported for insider dealing on the sheep market? I suppose it is a step up from the thieves and whores that spawned the rest of the population.

Every country is made up of a huge variety of people so it is very easy to meet people with different personalities. Most aussie's are not snobs but some are. It's just the way the world is.

Australia is no different to most Western countries. There are snobs, morons, red necks, hicks, hippies, goths, good and bad whatever. They're all here.
Maybe you're referring to the 'Moron' element that stick together in countries outside of Australia. This species are only interested in socializing with their own kind (usually in a crude and unruly fashion). Since this particular species has no interest in mixing with the natives (unless they are prepared to behave like complete and utter dicks, and drink themselves into oblivion), it is likely the "natives" interpret the disinterest as snobbery. No doubt there are similar species in other Western Countries. But be warned, don't waste your time and effort studying this particular breed, as it may result in a brain deadening state called 'Ozzlabotomiosa'.

if by snob you mean cultured and educated then yes i have met an australian with those qualities. Snob is the word used by the lower classes out of jealousy for something they secretly aspire to

Maybe they are tring to make them selfs feel better cause the distant relatives were all murders and theifs.
