Loudest Fireworks

There's nothing that loud that you can legally buy without a license. Consumer fireworks nowadays are limitted to 50 milligrams of flash powder (that's the stuff that make the "bang") for firecrackers and 130mg of flash powder for aerial fireworks. Compare this to the old M80s (when they were still legal) which had 2000 milligrams of flash in them - which was more than enough to do serious damage to a person, which is why they are now illegal.

The chest-pounding thumps at a professional display are from shells known as salutes. The bigger the salute, the bigger the thump (up to a certain point). However, no salutes are available to the general public.

Real M-80 are usually classified as having at least 60 grams of flash powder. No (ground) firecracker sold in the US can legally contain more than 50 milligrams of flash powder. Regardless of this, some firework stand operators still sell large, illegal items in excess of 50 milligrams of flash powder. However, many legal fireworks are sold as M-(number here)s purely as a marketing gimmick.I don't know any specific fireworks that have the maximum 50 milligrams, but you would be wise to keep all of this in mind when shopping.

I was outside watching the neighbors lighting off their fireworks. All of a sudden they said cover your ears. They lit it, and it seemed that the wick went for at least 30 seconds. It was the loudest bang I have ever heard in my life! Without exaggerating my heart skipped a beat, the windows rattled and car alarms were going off for an 8 block radius. What could this be? I know it definetly weas not legal for Illinois. I could go and ask them, but we really dont associate with them.

Thanks in advance.

M-80's and cherry bombs used to be the bad boys of the firecracker world but they no longer make them...the new m-120 is about as good as they make unless you have access to profession grade fireworks....those are federally regulated
Be careful and have fun.

Back in the day, it was the good old M-80, which I am pretty sure is still illegal. Not fun really - but very very loud.
