The flag is a symbol of our country, a piece of cloth, it is what it represents that we hold in our hearts.
But, if someone owns an American Flag and burns it, that is still his right. He can't burn the flag anyone else owns and he couldn't change my loyalty if he burned a million of them. Most of them are made overseas anyway.
Amending the greatest Constitution in written history for any reason, much less this red herring would be tragic error in that it would open the door to further erosion of all our rights.
I'll call any Rep who voted against the amendment and thank them for their patriotism and their fortitude. By next week another trigger issue will come up, flag burning will wait in the wings while yet another distraction will divert us from the real issues .

I was always told that the American Flag should never touch the ground and if it does, then burning it is the proper way to dispose of it. I've also heard the same thing is to be done if the flag becomes torn and tattered. I guess because it would be viewed as disrespectful to simply throw it in the garbage.
Not sure where that came from, but I'm from a very patriotic family (many family served and are currently serving) and that is the information that has been passed down.

As former military, I spent time in Afghanistan so that other people could freely speak their minds on a wide variety of topics. It angers me that people feel so strongly that the entire US system is bad that they must burn the flag, but I want those people to be able to speak their minds in any way that doesn't actually hurt others. If people are allowed to vent in a harmless way, maybe they'll be less likely to vent in a harmful way. These people may be crying out for intelligent dialogue that may change their minds about the entire subject. I hope this helps you understand the opposing side of this issue.

No state icon should be accorded religious icon status. And in the case of the flag, it defeats the purpose. The flag stands for freedom, yet idiotic conservatives want to stifle free speech. They should be burned in effigy!

Because it is censorship plain and simple. I served in the military for 6 years and to the core of my bones it is my right to show my displeasure with our government even by burning the flag.
"Censorship is telling a man he can't have a steak just because a baby can't chew it."
--Mark Twain
"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear."
--Harry S. Truman, message to Congress, August 8, 1950

I am an immigrant who are legal in this country.Everyone thought I love America so much, they think I like to earn the money here and live in a nice home. Those things mean nothing to me Except MY FREEDOM THAT I love very much.Think about my past if I criticize the hot shot in my old country and he will order me to vanish the next few days. Now you get the picture why I did not call my Congressman or Senator.

free speech and all that, buddy. it's a symbol - you're not burning a person. we live here because we don't go to jail for silly things like burning a flag - that's what it stands for. by taking away someone's right to burn it, you're taking away the whole point of freedom & what the flag is supposed to stand for.

Well said, but you should had done it before and not after.
You close the gate after the horse got out.
I believe in freedom of speech, and according to the Supreme Court burning the flag is a form of speech. Please notice I said Supreme Court, and not the Constitution.

I agree- the 1st amendment protects "freedom of speech" and NOT "freedom of expression"
If I choose to deficate on Bill Clinton's doorstep (like he crapped on his office) isn't it my right to express my disgust for him?
Let the states decide...or just make it legal for citizens to horsewhip flag burners.
