While PC based DVR's are good- they are not perfect. I have had more than several DVDs not turn out when burning a show from the computer to DVD.
Then there's the question of--- what happens if my computer crashes or needs to be repaired or runs out of memory? With a computer based DVR there is also the drawback that the more you record...the slower your computer will get as memory is used. And do you really want your computer on during a thunderstorm? I'd rather replace a stand alone unit for $200 than a computer for $1000 should lightning become a factor!!!
Separate components are always the safest way to go; whether stereos, entertainment centers etc. Always use a power strip with a surge protector on all of your entertainment technology.
Hope this helps!

I like stand-alone DVRs over PC based ones. They are easier to operate for the whole family. There is more support for a stand-alone DVR than for a PC based one. And a stand-alone DVR can be cheaper than a PC based DVR.

If you are in the US, I'd recommend a TiVo as it has the most features, it is the easiest to use, and it is the most reliable of the DVRs, in my experience with TiVo and Cable DVRs.

It depends on your use ... if you are using it for watching movies ... you can use stand alone DVR, much comfortable to use .. but if you get a PC based one , you can read DVDs , specially games now come in DVD ... and if you have a TV out slot for your graphic card , you can just connect your pc to a normal screen to watch a movie comfortably
