Basically you can make it as a slave because your BIOS can detect the hard drive with win xp. But when you boot up your 98 OS, you will see that it still cant see new drives there bec your 98 OS has the fat32 file format, and it cannot read NTFS (which is obviously the format your win xp uses). Either you make the win xp drive as master so that it boots up first (if that works) then you can manage both harddrives without a problem. Make sure you back-up your files before trying to manipulate the drives just in case something goes wrong. =)

If you have a Windows XP based computer, you can have Windows 98 as a slave, but there really is no reason to keep Windows 98, XP is far too superior.

The short answer is yes, but the overlaying question is "why would you want to?" Windows 98 was a good operating system when it first came out, but advances in computing technology and the associated operation of computer hardware have left old 98 in the dust, proving that the defunct operating system is no longer robust enough to maintain a solid, fully functional Operating System. Back up your files, save the things you want, and do yourself a favor and wipe the HDD and install a fresh copy of XP on your system..........If it can handle it of course.

You can install 2 operating systems on your PC - When you start your PC you will be given the choice of which operating system you wish to use.

Having said that, if you load windows XP onto your system, it will alter your file system so that XP is the main operating system. This does have a major advantage in that your PC will operate much more quickly. There is no advantage in keeping Windows 98.

Your question indicates that xp is already on the hard drive. If so and it is not using ntfs then yes you can load it as a slave on win98 and access data. You will not be able to start winxp in this scenario. My feeling is also that if is a win98 machine it most likely does not have the power (insufficient ram, slow processor) to run xp. If the slave is ntfs, win98 will not be able to read it. You choice is to either not use it or to reformat it as fat32 - in which case all the info on the slave will be wiped out.

probably not. windows 98 does not understand the NTFS file system used by XP. sometimes bad techs install XP with the old FAT32 file system used by 98 so it is possible though unlikely.

the older the drive the more likely it will work

no, possibly as windows xp has the superior performance you will have a boot menu during booting for choosing which os to boot. the promary partition should be of windows xp. you can use the hdd as slave and no problem in it.
