I'm a mentor for a middle school youth. The program goals are to guide a youth to a successful entry into adulthood and help them reach their fullest potential.
A good mentor helps the youth: develop problem solving skills, learn discipline and commitment, build teamwork and cooperative skills, learn to set goals, improve self-esteem while developing a sense of pride, and last but not least - increase motivation to stay in school.
A mentor presents inspiration, listening and encouragement to the youth. A mentor is an advisor, not a preacher - a listener, not a psychologist.
Mentoring is a serious commitment and becomes an important relationship to both parties.

A Mentor is someone we look up to such as a role model. But a mentor is also someone who is around more, such as a teacher, a tutor, a friend, where a role model can be anyone even someone you dont know. Mentors are used in school systems and in work places it someone who will be there if you have a problem and if you need extra help with something that you just cant figure out.

The other answers are completely correct except for one thing.
I have a mentor on the net that I came to know through the net by accident. I do not have much experience on the computer and I asked for advice on downloading photos from him and he walked me through it step by step. Many e-mails and much of his time he spent helping me.
I found that I could trust him to ask him about mistakes I had made, how to fix them, how to do them easier, and the most important thing was I was not embarrassed to ask!
He did not treat me like I was slow or dumb, he just helped me.
No questions on my intelligence, no smart remarks, he just helped.
