I've done care work and the managers and office staff call the people we help 'service users.' The actual care workers just call them by their names -- it's difficult to think of someone as a 'service user' after you've helped them to the toilet a few times.

Actually, that is not the case. I worked in Mental Health Service (self help charity) and we called our client/members 'users'.
This is because they USED the service.
because there are computer programmers, technicians, hardware and software experts, analysts and what not, they had to distinguish between them and those who only USE the computers and the software. thus USERS
k?

hmmm.... everyone else is called consumers. I can see calling softwear users - users, because they don't consume the product, but drug users should be called consumers, because they do ingest the product. Like grocery shopping - should be called consumers, but purchasing a car - user.

So does McDonald's Corporation. They just don't do it publicly. Seriously, if you consume McDonald's more than 3X a week...the corporation dubbs you as a 'heavy user'.

Because they "use" their product. Others purchase, endorse, and obtain their product...but both of your examples "use" the product and then the product is gone.
