My knee jerk reaction would be my own country, Ireland.

When I went to America, It seemed that Americans everywhere said one of two things...

"You're from Ireland? WOW!!!"

"My great-great-great-great grand mother is Irish, so that makes me Irish too."

(Americans, don't worry, I came across some people who said they had European blood in their veins, but they're American, not European.)

Considering the fact that 95% of American s do not have passports and thus do not travel outside USA, it makes sense that some of these people would say "Duh! America is better!" as they do not have the opbjectivity to make an informed choice.

The Bush Administration gave America a bad name during its tenure.

What are the flaws of Ireland? The stereotype of heavy drinkers... I'm a teetotaller. I don't touch a drop of Alcohol. It's a paradox... Ireland has both the highest number of alcoholics and the highest number of teetotallers per head of population.

So the answer falls back on what you mean by better?

Standard of living? Ireland
Peace? Ireland
Scientific research? A draw. Many international firms in Ireland and in America. Many american firms in Ireland.
Film making? America,

and so on.

As I'm living in Africa at present, I can see the positives of living in Ireland, as well as the negatives. Likewise for America.

So... the answer is IRELAND.

Depends what you mean! I live in Eire (Republic of \ireland) And money's really good, jobs galore, life is a lot better than it was many years ago. Dublin is filled with people moving in from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, all coming because they can get good jobs and make more money than they would at home.
I have friends in the USA who tell me that things aren't too good right now, petrol (They call it gas) prices going up and they're beginning to feel the pinch. It's different in Ireland. I also know that my friends envy me because i live in a quiet spot, no houses nearby so i have all teh peace and privacy i like. They'd love that too! I'm off to the USA in October ... I'll be able to give you a more detailed answer if you wish

Choose between the land of my birth and the land of my ancestors?

I passed through Shannon airport, last Summer, going to and from R&R leave. It was cold, and dark and wet. In the Summer?

I've read about how the old country has improved in recent years, become much more prosperous by embracing globalism and market reforms.

I wish them well, but my home is on the other side of the ocean.

Being American, and of Irish descent...they both have strong points and weak ones...America is stronger, physically, and Ireland is stronger, patriotically...plus Ireland gave us the best Whiskey! So, weighing it... ROI wins...for reasons being it's just the best people in the best land.
