As in the first reply, you need to do some computer maintenance first. If the results of doing that are good, then that is what is wrong, and if not, there is something else.

When you get your computer up and runnng, do a disk clean up, which you will find in the same place as disk defragmenter, below. Then identify, by looking at the icons at the bottom right, all the programs that run on startup, and open msconfig [start, run, type msconfig in the field and hit enter] and click the startup tab and uncheck the ones that match what you have found. This requires a restart. After that, defrag the computer: Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Defragmenter. Restart.

The computer should start up faster after this, but if it doesn't do a lot better, then also run a spyware program and a virus program.

And after all that, maybe you should get a registry cleaner and CAREFULLY use that to clean it up. CCleaner is free and does a good job.

This is a difficult problem to diagnose without more information. Specifically, what sort of computer you have- age, operating system, processor, how much RAM your computer has, etc.

The most common reason for a slow start up is that you have too many programs set to run whenever you turn your computer on. Look in the lower right corner of your monitor's desktop. How many icons do you see? Too many un-neccessary programs will slow your system down, especially when you have an older processor, or perhaps not enough RAM.

The simple solution is to re-configure your startup programs. The method to do this will depend upon the sort of computer you use and it's operating system. If you use a Windows, go to Microsoft.com and search for "reconfigure startup programs".

The other solution would be to add RAM to your computer. It's relatively inexpensive and easy to install- just remove your computers outer casing with a screwdriver, and plug the RAM into the appropriate slot.

Of course, you may have spyware or a virus somewhere in your computer. Have you performed a spyware/virus scan?

It also wouldn't be a bad idea to run a defrag program, although a fragmented hard drive isn't likely to be the cause of your problem.

Again, there could be any number of problems- it's difficult to diagnose without more informtation. I've offered the three most common reasons.

I think everyone is on target with why a computer will start slow. As others have stated, startup programs, which are usually found in your lower right-hand of the desktop (windows).

But you could have little memory (RAM), and/or your harddrive could be overloaded. As a rule of thumb, a HDD should not be more than 50% full. Technically you can fill them much more, but don't be surprise if you encounter speed issues.

If you are using Linux, the newer versions require a lot of memory or they run very slow. Linux GUI has become very bloated.

your question is a little vague. The point gets across, that you have a slow computer, but to identify this correctly we need to know your OS, RAM, ect.

Hope this helps

it's either clogged up with spyware or you have lots of programs in your start menu. Run a good anti-spyware check and eliminate some seldom used programs from your start menu
