History is systematically collected information about the past. Normally this is in the written form, and may consist of recorded references to historical events, records and archives, or just everyday documents kept to enable future generations to understand how people lived in a particular period. Often in different stages throughout time, history has been distorted or biased for political purposes.

Actually, history is the study of change. If nothing ever changed, then you look to the present to understand the past (without change the past & present would be the same). It is precisely because things have changed that one must look to the past to understand the present. So history is really just the study of change: what, why and how have things changed, how, why and in what way did people react to that change, etc. The whole corporate "Who Moved My Cheese?" phenomena should point to the need for more history being studied in school, with just this study of change approach, as students would be prepared for transition & change, by studying how things have changed and how others reacted/resisted/embraced those changes in the past.

It is also a dialogue. Historians & amatuers alike can look to the past, the evidence, and draw different conclusions.

"It has been said that though God cannot alter the past, historians can; it is perhaps because they can be useful to Him in this respect that He tolerates their existence." -- Samuel Butler, 1835-1902.

HISTORY IS THE STUDY OF THE PAST AND IT'S CULTURES. HOW YOU STUDY IT AND LOOK AT IT DEPENDS ON THE PERSON OR WHOEVER YOUR INSTRUCTERS ARE OR WERE. SOME PEOPLE THINK EVENTS SHAPE HISTORY, OTHERS THINK PEOPLE SHAPE HISTORY, ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN TAUGHT.
