The baby, if you leave it at home, is going to cry and scream and social services will eventually take it away. It's really important to have at least one parent home with the baby at all times. I don't know for sure, because I am playing the Sims 2 now, but in the new versions you can get a babysitter or nanny... that's probably not an option in the old one. Unfortunately, having a baby is a lot of work in the game as well as real life, and you just have to make sure your Sims can afford to take care of it.

One of your sims needs to stay home to take care of the baby. It takes 3 days for the baby to become a child. If the baby starves, then it will be taken away by "child protective services". I suggest you have your sims take turns taking care of the baby so neither misses work 2 days in a row or loses their jobs. Their only motives are hunger and energy, so while playing with the baby will boost your relationship, it's easiest on your sims if you just feed them and sing them to sleep.
While Sims 2 does have the Nanny option, the original sims had a butler in one of the expansion packs (I forget which one) who would help take care of the baby.

One of your parents will have to quit thier job or child services will take your baby. Baby needs love and attention at random times during the day, so there's no timing it.

well, you can't leave the baby behind or social services will take it away. someone has to quit or have jobs with different shifts. you may cheat though.
