LOL.....So you think the President has this much power huh? I don't care what those rags and kooks try to spew, as long as they do not put our soldiers and citizens in harms way or endanger their lives. As long as they do not compromise our national security, and do not work to tear down our national moral. These are the folks with the agenda. Use the NY times for what its best for. Lining the bird cage. The NY times is a liberal rag that spews its liberal untruths and ideals. Dan Rather lost his job over spewing unsubstantiated nonsense. Gay marriage and Flag burning are two hot issues in this country right now. The voters will decide how that goes. The President has no control over what is in the paper and what isn't. If you want to see that kind of power talk to the Russians or the Iranians.

Because Karl Rove, Bush's political "brain", knows that the war in Iraq is unpopular with voters. This being an election year, Rove and the Republicans know that it is better for them politically to keep Iraq out of the top headlines, and focus instead on issues that rally the conservative base, like the ones you mentioned in your question. It's pure politics!

Hard to answer that question objectively. ...

My knee-jerk answer? He has failed in Iraq in terms of effective, military policy, politically (in terms of justifying the war for the sake of simple, "moral" ideas and in terms of practically getting rid of the "terrorist" threat), so he creates a smokescreen to hide his failure.

However ... knowing his base ... many of them consider Iraq a necessary involvement because without the US presence, there would be a power vacuum in that area. Some policy wonks fear that Iran would step in to fill the gap and invade Iraq. So the issues he concentrates on are the ones that actually concern his base. They don't want etc., etc.

But what if we did leave and Iran invaded Iraq? Boy, howdy.

Because the Bush team has alot to hide. When you are at the top, and the reality is "you're an idiot", you try everything to keep your fugg ups out of the press.

In all fairness, Bush shouldn't be blamed for this. The republican party is trying to plan an October surprise.

He knows that Iraq isn't a popular war, so he tries to distract us by throwing "issues" at us that he might will distract different segments of the population, and eventually everyone will be distracted by at least one, or at least overwhelmed.
