Listen let me tell you some things which i know you have heard a MILLION times. America and Europe is not as great as it seems. Internet?? ok yeah you can get it here...for $40 per month. Alot of people cannot afford that. So although many amercans have access to the internet, you have to understand that generally these are not poor people and the poor americans never get to have their voice or opinion heard because they dont have a computer or internet. Having said THAT, I am sure that you would love the opportunity to travel and make up your own opinions. Again guess what? the majority of americans never travel outside of the country either because it costs too much $$, most americans don't HAVE an extra $800 for airfare to Europe or south america. I am one of the lucky ones, i have been to many places and in my humble opinion i will say this about Russia.
No where else will you be able to go chill in the "asfalt" and just walk and talk and find someone with a 2lr bottle of pivo and 1lr of samagonka be invited to sit down and drink to the marines or to your saints day. While you are drinking someone comes with a guitar and everyone sings the old songs. On the way home the guys keep singing and wake up every babushka along the way home. If its summer...maybe you take a swim in the lake or river while you continue to drink. And you can do all this with 30 rubles in your pocket or zero because someone is ALWAYS celebrating something and willing to share.
Want more? sure Moscow is beautiful, the metro..wow.
But REAL russia...is how the agurtsy taste in the winter. The fried potatoes and fresh corn. Picking the tomatoes from your vadvor.
Taking a bath from a vidro and going to the bathroom in the outhouse. Walking the gusyati to the canalchik and helping grandma get some vyeniki. Every time there is a wedding its THREE days of festivities. Summer weekends with the cars honking because they going to the wedding... Russia is great. It may not currently have as much economic wealth as some nations but it has all the resources, history and culture that it needs to survive and be proud. It's a place where you can raise a family and know that your children will know the difference between right and wrong and how to respect their elders and peers.

In 2004 I visited Russia on a Volga River cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is made up of many islands and bridges and the draw bridges open at night for a certain amount of time so that large ships can pass through. If you are not home by a certain hour then you cannot get home until the bridges are closed down again. Also, Hitler had plans to stay at one of the major hotels in downtown when they won the Leningrad seige. They did not win the seige. The beautiful palace of Catherine the Great is now a museum for people to see so many awesome things. Russia had the second highest number of Olympic Medals at the Helsinki Oympics.

I went to school in the Ukraine but went there when it was still USSR. I stayed in that part of the world for 17 good years. I'm up to this day proud to be a soviet graduate. Russia is one of the best places to live. Even though the Mayfair and skin heads are causing a little bit of a problem but the people out there are very friendly, simple. The slavians are very nice and beautiful people. It's really sad when you meet people been brainwashed with western propaganda confidently saying unbelievable stuffs about that place. I usually just ignore them as illitracy or arrogancy is a big pain in the B.....

I've never been there but I read an exposé that said it's still one of the most heavily corrupted places on the planet, not that it means anything though because you find corruption everywhere. But for instance the article said that in some places if you want to open a business you don't go to the government to get a license, you go to the local mafia and tell them what you want to do and they tell you how much they want for you to do it. Also the article said that the countries vast natural resources are being pillaged at a horrendous rate and that almost all of it is exported to europe or china or india, illegally. But I don't know for myself, I've always wanted to take the transiberian railway across to china but I haven't had the money and time yet, I bet it would be fantastic. Sorry I only have these drab informations about it

Lots of people think its a very cold place but actually it's only cold in the very north of russia. In the south, near Moscow, the climate is actually a lot like Canada's or Northern USA's (actually a bit warmer at times). The day to day life in Russia is quite similar to that of people in America or Canada. Instead of shopping plazas, the have 'bazaars' which are like booths open every day that sell mainly anything like clothes, jewelry, food etc. The cars are quite different. Different companies make them and I'm pretty sure that vans are quite a rare sight in Russia. There's a ton of public transportation like metros and 'Marshutkas' that are like taxis that carry people to certain places.

I was living in russia for 4 years, when i was 10!
I love russia as i love my own country. I can never forget nights of Moscow, kermlin and ....
My russian language teacher(Tania) was so kind. The sky of moscow has a lonely color, which reminds me my past.
I wish to come once more to Moscow, during my life. Moscow for me is like a dream!
Sometimes our past becomes so valuable!
