It was not true religiion, it was false religion where they kept the people in subjection with fear of hell fire and demons and burned women who rebelled as witches at the stake.
If people knew the true about the bible instead of falsehood then they wouldn't have had the dark ages. The bible prophecy was that there would be a great falling away. The hell Jesus went to in the Acts 2: Was the grave. For dust you are and to dust you will return. This hell fire concept was in Egypt long before Christians ever came on the scene. The wages of sin is death not eternal torment. When people realize that the early christians who were Jesus desciples believed that Life was granted to obedient people and death to the wicked.

religion was far more prevalent in the high middle ages and the early renaissance than it ever was in the 'dark ages'.
the high middle ages and the renaissance were times of steadily growing prosperity and rapid technological advance.
the problem with the 'dark ages' (450 - 650 or thereabouts) was not that 'religion' was in control - but that nobody was in control. bandits, huns, vandals, and assorted other racial and religious groups spun out of control over europe, never allowing any region to settle nor any social or technological progress to take place.
societies may stagnate from an over-preponderance of religion (as most of the arab world has done since the last century) - but it is only social chaos which can halt and even reverse progress.
the us is temporarily in a bad way just now. but think of what iraq is like, afghanistan, somaliland.
get it?

History inevitably repeats itself. That is why we have History as a subject... so we can try and stem that problem... however, people don't heed warnings. When I read your question, I saw it on two levels... 1) George W and his fanatical right wing christianity and 2) Muslim extremism. Well, As for the Muslim world, if you do the math, they are on the same track as Christianity (the crusades happened on the same timeline as what the Muslims are at now in their timeline), so it just seems like natural progression of religion (except Buddhism, but I could be wrong). As for G.W.... can't help the helpless.
So, in short, yes... we are in for a new Dark Age. When Religion and State are mixed, there are definite problems. We learned it, now mr. W has to learn it... would be nice if he picked up a book huh?

Almost correct, ruled by the Holy Roman Catholic Church would be more correct. Unfortunately the atrocities done by the Catholic church during that time is falsely charged to Christianity. Christianity was held hostage by a ruthless criminal cohort for a thousand years. Even after the reformation it still took nearly 200 years to purge the grime from Christianity. Now that slime has begun to creep back into our churches. We are in desperate need for true revival.

That is correct. The Pope instituted the crusades and had killed anyone who wouldn't become catholic.
During the same period the great church building took place where the bishops competed against each other for who could build the biggest church.
