Congress doesn't think so!
I wonder how many here would desecrate another nations flag?

We don't pledge allegiance to the "fabric" of the flag as some suggest and yes, that would be stupid. And children don't learn about loyalty to their sports teams they are a part of from the color schemes of their jersies either. These are merely signs to others of what they hold in common and what brings them together. The flag has value to these people not because it represents all of them under it, but because it includes each and every one of them personally. So when you attack my flag and disrespect it you are doing the same to me. Why would you if I have done nothing to you? And how would you feel if I threw down a family portrait and spit and walked on it and cussed it and burned it and then said you are crazy for feeling anything because it's just a piece of paper? But if you are exercising the right to express yourself by walking on my flag in protest by the 1st Amendment then fine. You won't mind me exercising my right to free speech by the 1st Amendment to express to you my disapproval of it...and then going home with my new flag.

"Desecrate" implies some religious aspect to it. Unless Americans are idolators who worship a flag more than a "god", it's the wrong word.
The ability to damage or destroy one's own national the flag is a sign of how much freedom you have. If you can't do it, you're living in a country comparable to PR China, North Korea, or any extremist, fascist, or communist regime.

As repulsive as burning the flag in a protest is, it would be a violation of the first amendment to make it illegal.
Ironically the only proper way to dispose of a worn out flag is by burning it. It is the protest part that makes it freedom of speech.

Yes it should be a felony! I know you kids don't know about combat and the trust you build. However, many men and women have died for "Old Glory". The American flag is the one symbol that gives us hope in times of despair. How quickly we forget what 911 meant to all of us. When I see other nations burning our flag it really pisses me off.

It SHOULD be illegal!! But if our govt. can't even enforce our immigration laws, why add another one they won't enforce? Those who burn our flag on USA soil should think about where they are and if they don't love the USA any more than that they should f--ing LEAVE!! It shows disrespect for the very country that person is IN!! That person is protesting all the rights and freedoms, all the ones who died for those rights and freedoms of the very country he is standing in!! It shows how stupid, ignorant, disrespectful, ungrateful that person is!! IMHO!! My story and I'm stickin' to it!!

It is disrespectful and not ethical... but no. Freedom of speech and expression.
At the same time though, it should be OK for someone to pound a flag burner into the ground if they catch them at it
I think a $2.50 fine should be imposed then.

No. While I think that burning the flag is utterly tasteless and disrespectful, I wonder if we actually need a constitutional amendment. Wouldn't that just negate the first amendment?

I think its simply direspectful! There are other means of protesting than burning a flag... and what does it achieve?
Is there historical evidence that burning flag helps in fulfilling any mission or objective or is it simply a public display of one's own frustrations?
