Every area has their own individual projects for hunger. Talk with local ministers or social service agencies about which ones follow through on their promises, without large administrative costs. The Salvation Army is an excellent example of a national charity that serves the people they have promised to help with soup kitchens or sharing programs. Many churches help in sponsoring a food pantry for the area they serve. Likewise, in small towns to large cities, there are programs to help the locals. You just need to spend a little time looking.
If you are interested in making a difference individually, that can be done by locating a family having a difficult time and helping them out with store-bought groceries, with surplus garden produce, or even by taking them a meal on occasion. This one-on-one experience helps you to get to know someone and allows you a different perspective on doing without.

Yes, hunger and shelter are huge problems in the USA ::: Which most of the world ignores since they want to hate us or only view the USA through the entertainment shows we produce (Television-Movies-Magazines-News-Etc-Etc-Etc).
There are many homeless and people who need basic assistance in the USA.
Local Church's often are great places to volunteer time and money to. These Church's provide "Soup Kitchen's", "Shelters", and "Job assistance". Sadly, when major corporations do rally around fund raisers, the money usually goes outside the USA or to bigger programs than the local soup kitchen.
Additionally, many local governments provide these services too. However, since these are government funded, there is often too much "Red Tape" for any desolate person to really be able to use the programs. Mental Diseases, and psychiatric problems often create problems with the government programs ... also, families who have gone broke often will not use these services in fear that the government will rip the family apart. This is very common with the illegal immigrant's who are here and are starving.

Donate time, food or money to a local food bank.
Help explode the myth that greed is good. Greed is NOT good.
Promote sharing instead of promoting the false glamour of being rich. There's enough food to feed the entire population of planet Earth. Its shocking and disgraceful that rich countries can't or won't even feed all their own citizens.

Eat.
There is no hunger in the US. Countries that have hunger don't have stray dogs. We have so many free food programs you can't count them. Obesity is our problem. Bleeding heart liberals talk about hunger in America, like we need more free food programs. Food stamps, WIC, food banks everywhere. We don't need any more.

Try and help donate can food to places like First harvest food bank, send what donations you can to places like Salvation Army or the Red Cross.
This will help slow it down but it isn't going to totally stop it because there are just too many family's out there that are struggling just to try and make it.
