It seems to me the Republicans want to discuss Flag burning to rally their base and because it's the only legislation they might be able to actually pass?

Let's see, in 2004 Bush ran promising a gay marriage amendment. He got elected, and when he announced his post-election agenda, gay marriage wasn't even on it! Now, 2 years later, it's an election year, and the Congress is talking about gay marriage. And, of course, flag-burning. They trot this little horse and pony show out every two years, take a vote that doesn't pass for a problem that doesn't exist, and then smugly act like they are uber-patriots, instead of merely incompetent lawmakers.

Honestly, I don't think there has been a single incident of flag-burning in 30 years. How dumb would you have to be to think this is an important issue? Of course, how dumb would you have to be to vote Republican to begin with?

This is an election year.
This is a tatic, to use against all the people who defend the first amendment,

does it matter that the people who voted against the amdenment most likely are opposed flag burning but will defend the 1st Amendment.

No, a tv commerical doesnt really offer much discourse.

Immgration is the other tatic, a low polling presdient means republican legislators need to distance themeselves on some issues such as immgration...and it also rallies the both the racist and thier base.

Politicians want to get elected this year. The important issues can be devisive, but everyone can "rally 'round the flag," even if the Supreme Court has already said that burning the flag is a form of symbolic speech, so it's protected by the 1st Amendment.

Perhaps, but the flag is also an incredibly powerful symbol.

Politicians may believe that since this is so, the flag-burning issue may indirectly involve several other issues fundamental to Americanism (whatever that is-- but for lack of a better term, you know?). It may be viewed as a symbolic battle-- like, since you can't burn flags, America, symbolically, is still strong and protected.

Maybe?

Actually, there are quite a few reasons. The first is to focus on something other than the "War or Terror" or, more important to us "stoopid Liberals", the terrorist at large, Osama bin Laden. Another thing that it doesn't focus on is the crap happening here, ALL the crap happening all over Africa, let alone the growing nuclear capabilities of N. Korea and where they intend to launch the first test missile. Then, it gets the vote of the super-Reich Wing, those who care more about the supression of speech than children dying in a war over oil.

Because to some people it is a big issue. This is a big country with diverse attitudes. Some people have different beliefs than you, and you should be more tolerant to their views. I am glad that the amendment did not make it out of congress, but we live in a democracy. If some people thought that jello was evil and should be banned, then they have a right to use the process to get their voice heard. if enough people agree with them, it gets voted on. If more people agree with them, it gets ratified and made law. In the case of an amendment, it goes to both houses of congress, then the pres, then the states.

Becasue you washed up hippy...it's treasonous behavior to burn our nations flag. Just imagine if some poor moron tried this during the revolutionalry war, or WWI or WWII or Korea. They'd a been dealt with by the people. So if you don't like this nation go ahead and leave - I woun't miss ya.

I would guess that it must be important to somebody or there wouldn't be an issue.

Remember, some people don't hate America. Some are patriotic and still love our nation and don't want to see our flag desecrated.

I personally don't really care, but some do.

Well it didn't pass by ONE VOTE....ha ha.....

Maybe they can now concentrate on issues a LITTLE more important like BORDER SECURITY....but they won't because BIG BUSINESS likes CHEAP LABOR.....and CHEAP LABOR comes from Mexico.....that's one reason they didn't want to raise minimum wage....but of course they gave themselves a raise.....

Any middle class person who votes for Republicans are morons.
