First thing you might want to do is go to www.ussearch.com. Type in his name and age, and it should come up with some results. You don't have to pay for the website to do a background check, or anything, unless you want. It does make it easier, though, especially if you have his social security number.
Step 2: if he's listed in the results, it will also list a city where he might live, or has lived. Then, you can look online for free directory assistance (white pages) and try to find him there.
Here is a really great website listing many different links to search sites that are free: http://www.nettrace.com.au/resource/search/people.html. You might want to try this one first.
Another possibility is to contact the police department of the city where he's living (if you know the city) and see if they can help you. They have access to information that regular people don't.
You mentioned you haven't seen him for 9 years; why did he leave? How old were you when you last saw him? Did he leave any personal items behind (besides his child)? What about your mother? Are they still married? What's his profession (ie teacher, plumber, electrician, doctor, etc.)? Why hasn't he gotten in contact with you? It seems to me that an adult would be more able to financially afford to search for a child, than a child having to search for them.
These are questions that may help you find him.
If you can respond back to me if you want, with your answers, and maybe I can suggest some other things to do.
Good luck. I look forward to hearing your answers so I can perhaps help you more.

I consider it a challenge to try and find long lost school friends or help others find family members they have not heard from in a long time. The first thing I usually do is to go to www.USSearch.com or to www.Zabasearch.com. Zabasearch seem to have more updated information. Once you log on to Zabasearch you can see a date for when their last address was updated, say June 2006, so then you can be somewhat sure it might be a current address, and you can match the names listed with his birth year to be sure you have the correct person. Once I feel I might have a current address, I then go to a site like anywho.com and do a "Reverse Directory" of any phone number that might have been listed on Zabasearch for that person. "Reverse Directory" shows a name and address for listed telephone numbers. AOL White pages are a good current address look up site also.
I have also found people by searching on Classmates.com and Myspace.com I have also found death notices on a person I was searching for by just typing their name into Google.com.
You can also acsess the Social Security Death Index to check and see if someone you are looking for may have passed away.
Unless someone has just firmly decided that they do not want to be found you have a very good chance of being able to track them down by just searching a few sites on your computer.

I too am searching for my adopted son. Have been for 12 yrs. What I did was to call the police dept. in the city he lived in. They found him and gave me an address which turned out bad because he had moved. I too don't have any money. Have you asked your mother about his side of the family that you can contact? Maybe one of them know his where abouts. It's hard seeking info. without the funds.God bless you honey and wish you the best of luck. byrd

The best place to begin is the social security administration. My friend and I found our half-sisters through them. On one page write down everything you know about your father - name, age, jobs you know he had, anything like that. Include your own name and information on that sheet as well. Then, on a separate sheet, write him a letter and tell him everything you want him to know. Put it in an envelop and seal it. Then, put that envelope in another one, along with the vital information you wrote about yourself and your dad. Take or send it to your local SS office and see if they can't help you out. Good luck.

You can type in his name at http://www.switchboard.com and put postings up on Geneology websites. I found my father because someone saw one of my postings and contacted me. Here are a couple other sites http://www.nettrace.com.au/resource/search/people.html
http://www.zabasearch.com/
