No offence intended. Is that a natural rivalry between the English and the Scots? Why is this so? How serious is it?

Yes, have you never watched Braveheart?? The Scots have many reasons to be angry at us English (mainly hundreds of years of rape, theft, pillage and murder of the Scottish people). I dont know how serious it is but I have never come across a Scottish person that has been nasty towards me, they are fantastic people with a fantastic history.

In terms of football it the first ever international match.

In terms of history just watch braveheart.

Seriously though. Centuries, no, millennia, of tribal conflict, religious sectarianism, all probably factors

the Scot would call it oppression, the English would call it central government. In truth Scotland wales and Ireland were the practise grounds for English colonialism. Therefore the Scots dislike the English in much the same way the Aussies dislike the pommes.

Going back to football.

International football was pretty much created to pit these ancient rivalries against each other in a sporting arena in a way that cricket couldn't. Cricket was so English it wasn't and isn't played to the same level in Scotland probably because the Scots saw it as an English past-time.

What the biggest rivalries in football have in common (certainly as far as England are concerned) is war. England has been to war with Scotland many times, Germany a couple of times, Argentina fairly recently, France most famously for 100 years. All nations that, too varying degrees, have a footballing rivalry with England.

The only other English rivalry that I can't relate to a war is Sweden. This rivalry stems from England having a Swedish coach and the fact inexplicably and despite no obvious gulf in class England have failed to beat Sweden in 40 years.

Historic rivalry as the countries were at war for hundreds of years. Still a bit of ill-feeling as the main government is based in London and Scots do not feel well represented, although better now that Scotland has its own Parliament (not a lot of power) Nowadays the rivalry shows mainly through sport. Most of the bad-feeling caused by English media, who concentrate sloely on English team and are very arrogant.

Many reasons, the fact we live near eachother, the many wars we have had, the Jacobite Rebellions, the fact the English have goverment over the Scots...the list is endless.

Normally its just a friendly rivalry, but on occasions such as football matches it can flare up. However, not all English and Scots hate eachother its just a traditional thing. Im English btw so no offence to anyone.

sure there's a contest. this is an identical because of the fact the competition between soccer communities, between neighbouring cities and between the English and the Germans. the fact is that there are actually not any English and no Scots. the two have a blended ancestry. the well-known public of persons residing in England have a Scottish super-grandparent, and the well-known public of persons residing in Scotland have an English super-grandparent. There are greater first, 2d or 0.33 era Scots residing in London than there are in Scotland. That properly primary Englishman Tony Blair became born in Edinburgh. maximum of his cupboard are Scots. The Liberal Democrat celebration is administered by ability of a Scot, who replaced yet another Scot. i'm not sure approximately David Cameron, however the call has a enormously Scottish ring to it. Our Queen, God Bless her (Elizabeth the 2d of england, and accepted of Scotland) is merely a much off descendant of the Stuart dynasty, yet her mom became a Scot. So next time you experience like dressing up in a plaid skirt, portray your self blue and charging around crying "fae Scotland", undergo in concepts that your mom became born in Doncaster and your grandfather became Lithuanian.

Yes there is. In history England has generally been the aggressor/invader/oppressor out of the countries of the UK and so are the bad guys - to some degree the Scots, Welsh and N. Irish all have some form of dislike for the English - it is strongest in Scotland for some reason. They really seem to hate us!

(not all Scots I'm sure, but plenty!)

I think everyone has a natural rivalry with the English. Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France. See, the English didnt realise that you kinda annoy people when you arrive in their land with armys and guns and demand control. It kind of gets their backs up. A mistake that they today still haven't learned.
