The ones I loved at around 13 were Treasure Island, A Girl of the Limberlost, Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood, Pollyanna, and No Promises in the Wind.
I recently read an easy adult book about a 13 year old growing up in the Great Depression called "A Room of My Own" that was excellent. Another one I read recently was "Philip Hall Likes Me, I Reckon Maybe" .
All of the books I recommended are sex and violence free.

It really depends on the reading level and maturity level of the girl. I reccomend th eDaughters of the Moon series and book by John Flanagan. Not to mention all the Harry Potter stuff that's going around. It the girls doen't mind long books and likes Fantasy, I'd suggest Eragon and it's sequel Eldest. Umm... other books like the Chronicles of Narnia are good. Or, if she's up for a bit of not-quite-adult-not-quite-kid book stuff, check out Stephen Lawhead.

Whale Song by Cheryl Kaye Tardif
http://www.trafford.com/03-1246
This original collector's copy will be available until July 15th, 2006.
A new expanded version is set to be released by Kunati Books (UNA imprint) in January 2007. See http://www.kunati.com/catalog_whale_song.html
"A wonderfully well-written novel. Wonderful characters [that] shine. The settings are exquisitely described. The writing is lyrical. Whale Song would make a wonderful movie." ~ Writer's Digest
Thirteen years ago, Sarah Richardson’s life was shattered when her mother committed suicide. The shocking tragedy left a grief-stricken teen-aged Sarah with partial amnesia.
Some things are easier to forget.
But now a familiar voice from her past sends Sarah, a talented mid-twenties ad exec, back to her past. A past that she had thought was long buried.
Some things are meant to be buried.
Torn by nightmares and visions of a yellow-eyed wolf, yet aided by the creatures of the Earth and by the killer whales that call to her in the night, Sarah must face her fears and uncover the truth―even if it destroys her.
Some things are meant to be remembered―at all cost.
Whale Song is set on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada, and features, Bamfield, Victoria, Vancouver and Wyoming, USA.
Also, a screenplay was recently completed at the request of a leading film producer. Possible movie in a few years!
Autographed copies of the collector's copy of Whale Song are available at the author's site.

One of my favourite books when I was our age was "Are you there God, it's me Margaret?" by Judy Blume, it's not a religiouos book, I know it sounds like it is. It's about a young girl going through things that young girls do. She is about 12 or 13 I think. I read that book 6 times at least and still love it. It's on my shelf right now!
I don't know 13 year olds these days but I loved it when I was that age (it wasn't that long ago I am 22 now).

I am fourteen and I read the Da Vinci Code when I was 13. Best book I ever read. Before you read it, check out Angels and Demons. Anything of Dan Brown makes me feel so intelligent. Also - get Sabriel by Garth Nix. It is an exciting fantasy about a girl who sets out on a quest to save her father from the Dead, encountering whatever the heck you can imagine....WoW. Romantic too..

Anything by Lois Lowry is good (she writes for a range of levels). Someone mentioned Cornelia Funke's Thief Lord, but her Inkheart and Inkspell books are also good. Diana Wynne Jones is great (I especially love Howl's Moving Castle). The previously mentioned Travelling Pants books and anything by Roald Dahl are good choices as well.

depends on the maturity and reading level of the 13 year old. She may like the Roald Dahl books. They are all great for any age or she might enjoy something like Lord of the Rings if she has a long enough attention span to read it! I, personally like Harry Potter and I think that's great for any age.
