First, the movies suck. Too many sequels, derivatives and reamkes, not to mention all of those horrible adaptations of bad TV shows. For every Charlie's Angels, you get ten My Favorite Martians.
Second, and this is the big one: Theatres suck. I stopped going to theatres because the experience is crap. The last movie I saw in a theatre was The Scorpion King. I rather liked the film, but the theatre was cramped, smelled bad, had a lousy sound system and too damned many yuppies yammering on their cellphones.
Concessions are way overpriced. Ticket prices have become ridiculous, yet the venues themselves make no effort to improve comfort and enjoyment. I've seen lots of mediocre films in decent venues back in the 1980's and the overall experience was worthwhile. Today, I don't have the stomach to see a great movie in ANY theatre, because they all suck.
I am firm believer that anyone who uses a cellphone during a film should be dragged up to the front of the room and shot in the head.

No originality.
Many movies are remakes or adaptations from books.
The few original ones use concepts that have been done to death.
Added to this is the fact that movies come out on DVD or pay per view six months after their release. Many people simply wait for these events since a night out at the movies is so expensive nowadays.
The once famous directors and producers are getting old and their ideas are stale. The Speilburgs of the world are branching out into other forms of entertainment.
The one breakout director/producer/writer is IMO M. Night Shamylan his movies have messages even if some of the concepts are old. His movies really make you think

Fear and lack of education. Producers are generally uneducated morons and don't know what entertainment really is. They mistake action for art, and forget Aristotle and Shakespeare and think people are stupid. They almost completely ignore modern myth with the exception of some of the comic book movies, like V for Vendetta for instance, to make movies like Mission Impossible III which royally sucked. They have no idea how imaginative people really are, and they are afraid to take risks that go beyond Hollywood formula of hot chicks, violence and happy endings.

Part of the problem is the recent studio mentality that ONLY a rehash can make money. It's not the only thing, there's a lot of trends happening, but the giant influx of remakes over the past few years really doesn't help Hollywood...

Where do I begin?
Because they keep making these horrible movie remakes of old TV shows that don't need to be done.
Because a lot of these movies made by former SNL alumni (like Adam Sandler, Will Ferrel, Rob Schneider, etc) SUCK!

Because Hollywood can't come up with any original ideas. They are all remakes. Hollywood hasn't came up with an original idea in 10 years. Its pretty sad but we have been getting some solid indie movies, but there a few and far between
