We have two "plain" goldfish (you know, the ones that cost 26 cents or so), and we bought a fancy goldfish, and he ended up dying within 5 days of being put into the tank with the other goldfish. We think maybe he had some sort of disease, but we're not sure. Every website I find says that fancy goldfish shouldn't be with aggressive fish, but I don't know if "plain" goldfish are considered aggressive. I just don't want to kill another fish so I want to make sure I get the right kind this time.

Thank you!

Your placement was fine. One thing you should always do when introducing new fish to a tank is put the new fish in another tank....called a hospital tank....for a few weeks prior to putting them into your good tank. This will give you time to see if your new fish have any diseases so you would not introduce that disease to the good tank and your other fish. Was the water levels correct for your new fish? This could be another possibility. That is why many pet stores ask you to bring a sample of your water when you are returning a dead fish for credit. Stress is something else that could harm fish. They could have just arrived at the store...then scooped out again to be brought home by you. If the fish was swimming fine and looked fine you may never know what killed your fish.

They can be fine but just like any other animal some can be more aggressive then others so it really depends on the temperament of the fish. Even if they get along fine you would still need to make sure the fancy gets enough food, since single tailed goldfish can swim much faster they usually get the food first. If the tank is overstocked though the fish can become more aggressive but can also cause health problems. Singles tailed goldfish need 15-20 gallons each and fancys need 10 gallons each, they both can reach 8+ inches but the single tails can even grow over a foot.

How long has your tank been set up? If its still somewhat new, under 2 months, then it can still be going through its cycle. If the ammonia or nitrite are high putting a new fish in there is like putting it in poison. The fish you have now may not be reacting to it either because they are somewhat used to it or just because they tend to be a little stronger then fancies. You should test your tank and if the ammonia and nitrite are 0 and you have at least 5 nitrate then your tank is cycled and when the nitrate gets over 40 you should do a water change.

You should always quarantine a new fish before you put them in your main tank. A 10 gallon would be great for that and you can usually get them for $10 or under. And get a cheap little sponge filter or even make your own.

Oh and btw goldfish don't have a 3 second memory. There has been tests that prove that, one of them was done on the show The Mythbusters.

No, common goldfish get 4* bigger (over 2 feet) and are way quicker and thus will get almost all the food. Also, commons need ponds, not bowls, while fancies do poorly in ponds for the winter. Fancies still need 15 gallons each, as well as a cycled, dechlorinated, over filtered, tank with 25-50% water changes done weekly. All of these things could have killed your fish

A goldfish gets along with any other goldfish they are not fighters, so any other cold water fish you choose will do well enough. He could have died from something else as I said goldfish are not aggressive

One is counseled, on condition that each and every fancy desires 30 gallons. in case you wanted to get 2 smaller ones you may want to, yet as they were given larger you would could get a larger tank (in possibly a 12 months)
