Stay awake until your normal bedtime and this should help put you back on track. Your body cannot store sleep like a battery. If you need to sleep late on the weekend, then it is to make up for the sleep deficiency you built up during the week. It this happens a lot then you might want to adjust your sleep habits so you get more sleep. Believe it or not you can sleep too much which will make you tired, and yes you can get too tired to sleep well. The only cure is to stay up until you fall asleep.

When you have sleeping problems again try: Warm Milk at bedtime (yes it works, and it is natural). Take Melatoin, a neurotransmitter normally produced by the body. It can be found in most supermarkets and drug stores at a reasonable price. Develop good Sleep Hygiene; remove the TV from the bedroom, sleep in a dark place, only use your bedroom for sleeping so when you go to bed your body will know it is time to sleep. If after 20 minutes you don’t fall asleep then get out of bed and do something quiet (read or watch TV) for 20 minutes. Avoid caffeine after noon, and don’t eat an hour before going to bed (the stomach is still working so it won’t want to go to sleep). If noises at night disturbs you then get a fan and run it all night, the fan will cover most noises, and your body will get used to the constant noise pretty quickly (make sure you don’t have it on rotate so it won’t disturb you by waving across you, if it gets too cold then point it away from you.

If the problem continues then you might want to talk with a doctor. Trazodone is a good medication for this. It is safe and reasonably priced. It is an antidepressant, but not a very good one. It has one major side effect, it makes you sleepy, and it can be used safely for years (after 5-6 years I started hearing a ringing in my ears, which is another side effect, so I stopped taking it, but after being off it for years I am taking it now with no problems. Drugs like Ambien are meant to only be used for a short time (2 weeks or so), and recently we have heard of problems like sleep walking, sleep driving, or sleep eating (I took it for over 2 years with no problem though). If these sleep problems continue then you might need a specialist and a sleep study.

Went through this everytime I had to switch from midnights to days when I worked as a police/fire dispatcher. If you can, yes, stay up today. If you have to take a power nap, do like the other answerer stated: set an alarm and get up after no more than an hour. Then, just go to bed at a regular time tonight. You may even try taking a mild sedative like Tylenol PM a couple hours before you want to fall asleep. Good luck.

it will probably hurt you to stay awake for to long. Not a noticable hurt of course, but hurt none the less. I would say read a book on your side that should help you fall asleep, don't smoke for about two hours if you smoke (ciggarettes are kind of an upper) If you decide to stay up untill night again just don't relent. Night after night, stay in bed. It will take a while to change a bodies pattern.

it depends on your lifestyle pal. If that's the only time you've got to rest, then you are still lucky before others don't get enough rest at all. See, you still get to sleep for 8 hours. not bad. It's common for nocturnals. If that is not a hassle to your study or work, then maybe you can live with it.

What you can do is fix those things that hinder you to sleep at night. It is still best to get our rest at night you know. I guess you are missing a lot in the morning then. :)

Try to sleep at 11pm or 12am tonight. It might be hard, but lay in bed and read a good book that you enjoy so that you will start becoming tired. Usually that works, even though you might be tossing around in bed for a while, but trust me, it'll work.

You need to try hard to stay awake and get yourself on a schedule. Avoid caffeine when its close to time for you to go to sleep. Give it about a week and you should be good.
