Someone is doing it and they are profitting by it. I had a message that my computer may have been 'infected' and that I should download 'X' companys' anti-spy and anti virusware. Turned out they were the 'infector' to get you to buy their program right then or your system would crash. Turns out they are being investigated for fraud by IRS, FCC, etc. Seems lots of people lost their money and personal indentification information to this SCAM. Luckily I was able to get them OFF my computer - took some time but it worked. If it happens to you - BEWARE !! It will automatically install if you don't stop it !!

No, if the anit-virus companies wrote the viruses the would use better grammar and better social engineering. There is no end of bored mutant teenage geeks who have nothing better to do but be a menace to others. Also if the anti-virus companies were behind the creation of viruses they would be wise to make Mac and Linux viruses as well in addition to attacking Firefox and not just IE.

I seriously doubt it.
There are enough people out there writing viruses to keep the companies in buisness, they wouldn't have a need to generate more.
When there's a slow down, perhaps. For now I think it's safe to say that anti-virus companies aren't like Microsoft, no need to generate new OS's and patches for Broke-Out-Of-The-Box stuff.

I wouldn't put it past them, especially if independent virus writers stopped doing what they do. But there they haven't, and there is no evidence that the companies are supporting the writers.
Just because they profit from it, does not logically mean that they are creating the condition. Ultimately, Microsoft, with their unbelivably unsecure software, is the cause these problems.

Even i had a doubt of this sort long time back...But i think, "if debugging is the art of solving bugs, programming is the process of putting them in ".... So, there is somebody else who programs these.... not the anti-virus companies !

I also feel that some of the virus is written by some anti-virus product.like if you dont buy their product or anti-virus there is no where you can get rid off the virus.

I have heard this question many times. The simple answer is that no reputable company would do such a thing.
Then again, Microsoft sends you "Windows Genuine Advantage" which fits the definition of spyware.
