How about comparing and contrasting two pop icons...

IE. Michael Jackson and John Lennon...

Both great musicians in their own right and time, compare and contrast their differences and similarities...

Compare and contrasts are easy, however they do take a lot of research. You can pick and view a topic that is important to you and constrast that view to the opposite view...

What's up?

Look, this is college Intro to English Comp, am I correct? If so, start with your perspective of the task, first. You're looking at this as a chore and that's why you're stressing. ANd I can guarantee you that if that's where your head is, that's going to be reflected in both your performance and the end product. SO lighten up. Don't look at this like a chore but an opportunity for YOU to be heard. That'll empower you and help your written voice.
Next, write not just about something that has a lot of readily available research material, but something that you know something about. That also adds strength and credibility to the work which also is evident in your written voice.
For example, a sure bet is family. Talk about some of the key people in your family from the perspective of imigrants. You know, ethnicity, where they're originally from, when they arrived in this country, what they did when they got here, and lastly, how they have affected your life. This is good because it draws the user into your life and makes them WANT to know about you.
Another excellent topic is the Middle East conflicts. It is relevant, concise, newsworthy (thereby providing lots of information), and it offers a variety of perspectives. Not to mention the fact that if you happen to be from there or are of Middle Eastern descent, your essay pretty much writes itself. If not, talk about the history of conflicts and what they are about. A great deal of Americans don't really have a clue as to what ANY of the Middle East conflicts are about. Much less the fact that many are Holy Wars or Jihad (pronounced Jee-hodd). And within this particular subject, there are many perspectives and topics. Like our military there or your friends that are military there. The war between Islam and Israel, it's Biblical roots til today. And so on...
Lastly, write about a hobby. Something you like to do and know a lot about. For example surfers would have no trouble talking about their thing and referencing the history of the activity. Then they can add to it by talking about where they surfed and what it was like. Always remembering to keep it interesting for the reader. Get them there with you by writing discriptively.
Anyway, those are a few suggestions from someone who has been there and done that. I hope I was helpful and didn't come off as a total know-it-all. Cause that's far from the case (as can be gleaned by my use of run-on sentences...lol). My best wishes for your success in whatever you choose to write about. Here's a sample of my writing...

On you way to class take down 5 topics of conversation you hear or are involved in and pick one for your paper. Someone has to bring up something of merrit worth writing about and with a plethera of information available. That shouldn't be too hard to do. Just keep your ears open. Heck, you could take 5 topics from questions here, just make sure that they are current events. Look at 5 blogs and find the last couple of entries. You'll find something of interest.
