Please release it near the edge of a pond. if it is a water turtle it will swim away . If not it will crawl away on land. And it will live two to three times longer on it's own than under your care. many turtle species are endangered. Please release it, so it can mate and reproduce. Would you want to be kept in a stinky pan of water and not allowed to mate ? MMMM ?

Where did the turtle come from? If it is wild, put it back where you found it. In many states, it is illegal to keep a wild-caught turtle. If it is not a wild turtle, the person who gave you the turtle should have answers to these questions, or you can check out websites such as Austin's Turtle Page for photos of different species and caresheets.

if it's small and a water turtle, you can release it near a pond and it'll be fine. go to http://www.turtleforum.com I am a member of this forum and it's wonderful and so helpful. they can help you with anything you need, and they're extremely friendly. at the top of the page, there's an "austin's turtle page" link and it can help you identify the type of turts ya have!
