This is funny, as my girlfriend's nickname is Snowflake as well. I am a white man, and she had the name already when we met.
Regarding the meaning: well, you know what a snowflake is. But apart from the obvious it also indicates a small, exceptionally beautiful, but very fragile entity that can melt away quickly when one gets too close to her.
