Phones take our voice and convert it into a Alternating Current (AC) similar to house electricity. A phone connected to wires uses Direct Current (DC) same as a car battery for power to opperate. The phone company supplies the DC voltage trough the phone lines to Power the Phone. As you talk into the speaker the phone converts your voice to AC voltage with the speaker and this "Rides" on the phone line along with the DC voltage. As the Voltages are different they can easily be seperated and at the other phone of who you call the AC voltage is converted back into your voice with the Speaker.
Cell Phones work similar. They get their Power from a DC volt battery you recharge. NOW here how it work without wires! It is like a Radio Station transmitting music to your car. Only like the old CB Radios Truckers use, it can Recieve and Transmit Sound. Think of listening to your Radio and like it someone talking to you on your Cell phone. Then as you talk into the Car Speaker it sends your voice to that person.
Here you a experiment. When we were young we would take two empty Soup cans or small coffee cans. Poke a small hole in the bottom of each and run a String through the hole and tie a knot so it not come out. Then two people each take a can and walk as far as your string (10-20 feet to try this) Stretch the string tight (holding only your can and not string) and one talk into a can and the other listen!!!
Then if you have two small radio speakers have some one solder wires to your speakers longer is better (10-20 feet). Again you two each get a speaker and walk away as wire allows, this "Phone" will not require the wires to be tight, just connected to the two speakers. Without touching the Fiber of the speakers just hold the metal part so the speaker vibrate. Talk and one listen!!!!
The bigger and better your Speakers the better your phone will work.
Our regular Phones and Cell Phones take the same things you just made for your experiment and they phone companies add Amplifiers so you hear better, just like the Volume control on your car Radio. Sorry this long and you understand.
There are no "Operators" anymore handling your call. This is now done electronic with Phone Switches capable of handling Thousands of phone calls. In a way you can think of these as a "Switch Board" only, instead of someone pluging your call into the hole of who you want to call the Phone Switch does this electronically.

All telephones translate your voice to a sign (analog or virtual). Your apartment mobilephone makes use of wires (a land line) to ship a sign to the opposite man or woman you're calling. It (the sign) passes out of your mobilephone by way of the wires to a communications facility which tells/directs the sign in which to move. Your cellphone mobilephone sends a sign utilising RF (radio frequency) similar to a residence cordless mobilephone , however insead of the sign going to the recharger/ base, it is going to a cellphone mobilephone tower, which works the the equal style of communique facility that directs your name.
