1. You only notice because our action have more effect on the rest of the world than any other country has on us. When things are going good, most Americans are isolationist. Ironically, the rest of the world often complains about this as well.

2. We do have a lot of national pride, but not more than the usual.

3. We upset the largest empire in the world at the time to get our independance, tilted the balance in WWI, played a huge role in WWII, stayed off soviet agression in the cold war, all the while interfereing less in other countries affairs than other world powers and colonial powers.

4. We are the most influential force in creating the successful forms of modern democracies, the market economy system, and cooperative bodies like the UN, NATO, etc..

5. We have the most wealth, 3rd largest populus, excluding petroleum the 2nd largest resource reserves.

6. At present we are the world's only superpower (I said world, not regional powers). At no time in history has the discrepency been larger.

7. Face it, the world needs our intervention. Remeber the war between the former Czech republics? A genocide raged on european soil uncheked until American intervention. It is still a sore spot that America DIDNT intervene in some of the genocides in Africa.

Because we are. I have been to about a dozen different countries and none compare to America. There is no other country I have visited that offers everyone the same opportunities for success. I don't feel Americans are stuck on themselves, but I do agree there is a sense of superiority when dealing with other cultures. And I am not just talking about Third World cultures, but the so called civilized societies like France and Italy as well.

I think "seem" is the most important word there. You see, America offers tremendous opportunities for those who are willing to take risks, work hard, and run with new and exciting ideas. I don't think Americans think they are "better," but we just have such a great country with so much to offer, that perhaps our enthusiasm carries us away now and then. We are really fun loving and happy! Maybe other people mistake this for arrogance.

Furthermore, the British were also always seen as arrogant. Some of this may have to do with the English language. English is a very in your face langauge, it tells it like it is, and gets right to the point. Perhaps this is also why people see Americans as arrogant.

I'm American, and it's too bad you feel that way. But I don't apologize for it. America is the best place in the world for someone who is ambitious and eager to succeed!

You see it is bigger than americans. it is a human problem (as far as i can see) notice how you posed the question. You used americans as a whole, a group. (america is huge by the way. )you refer to the group, when you can only possibly know of the people you have had an experience with. this is the same for americans. a lot of false truths reside in peoples head that in the lack of true knowledge gain strength, and in turn people then speak or write that mistruth. It is very important to seek the entire truth.

Because everybody looks up to americans (sounds snobbish but it's true in a way). US is one of the most powerful countries in the world. It attracts a lot of people.

You just think we do. The media does a good job at portraying a minority. We may say the rest of the world is too liberal, but that could just be a minority.
