There are different brands of intelligence. This is a phenomenon that has always amazed me. Humans are more adept at controlling their environment than are other animals. That's what seems to define our (human) intellectual superiority. However, keep in mind that cognitive ability is probably NOT the be all, end all of existence in our universe. For example, many seemingly unintelligent species have been around a lot longer than humans, and will probably be around long after humans are gone - if we do go away. Our time in existence is but a fraction of time when compared, say, with viruses or with sharks. Seems there's more to survival of species than intelligence alone! As for the Gulf spill, some roads to accidents should have been obvious; which means they're hardly accidents. How anyone involved with the Deep Ocean Horizon rig couldn't see an accident in the making is beyond me!

Scientist measure the intelligence of the animales by it's body/brain ratio.

It looks like the Mouse is the smartest animal on planet earth followed by humans, cows and bottleneck dolphins. Intersting huh? This has nothing to do what species have achieved more or who is more dominant but whos the most intelligent, ovbiously the mouse is tiny and cannot make tools but experiments with mice have concluded that indeed are very intelligent.

Humans. After that, chimpanzees. After that, bonobos. Chimpanzees recognize their own images in mirrors. They use tools, and can plan to use tools. Chimp troops have culture (very primitive, such as favored tools and/or methods of making and using tools). Chimps have been taught (some might say trained) to use sign language and other symbolic languages ("Yerkish," etc), and there is some evidence of exploratory language use beyond what was taught, i.e. combining signs together in a way that humans did not teach them.

The crux is that chimps have a humanlike intelligence. Dolphins don't -- no hands, so, generally, no tool use; less aptitude for learning symbolic languages. In ways that we can measure, dolphins don't match up to chimps.

But, for a moment -- take a dolphin's point of view. Chimps can't swim, so what good are they?

Well to answer this question one would have to wait to see who the last to survive on this planet would be. An animal or human might seem smart at some things but then screw the whole thing up in something else. Thats why I say the last one standing in the very end would have to be the smartest.
Pets in general though are pretty darn smart . THey have humans bringing them thier food and picking up thier poop.

Hmm, monkeys does seem like a logical answer. They do function like humans and can learn sign language, so yeah, I would say that monkeys are the smartest.

I also think that cats are very smart. They tend to keep to themselves and are sometimes very cautious. It's like they can smell a person and know if they have good or bad intentions with the cat.

Elephants are also supposed to be very intelligent, but I believe it is the dolphins who are almost as smart as we are. They come from another planet, is why. I know, I've been there myself, but I went during the tourist season and everything was too expensive.
