True they were "US" once, but you kinda wonder what happens after one passes away. You don't really know what's beyond, so naturally people will be afraid of something they can't be sure of.

Actually the Spirits are not people who have died, the Bible tells us that these spirits are rebel angels. Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10 very plainly states that "the dead are conscious of nothing at all...there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave." So how could any thing dead do anything at all? If you looked into Genesis about the 6th chapter it talks about Angels who rebeled and came to earth and took on human form.
But following the flood of Noah those Angels that had misused their gifts were deprived of the ability to take on human form again. It is of interest, however that demons ( rebel Angels) apparently can cause humans to see visions, and what they see may appear to be real. Since the demons are here to cause problems for humans, that is why so many people are afraid of the spiritual or should I say the spiritistic world that you speak of.
The spiritual world of God is not a scary place at all and it is always for the benefit of Humans. If someone is having a problem with demons, God can help rid you of that demon.

Because people were always afraid of what they did not know.... I'm not afraid of the 'spiritual' world, I've talked with my grandparents after they died and believe me, it';s not scary at all.
