Maya means illusion. It simply stands for that everything you can experience with your 5 senses is a illusion. Now don't stand in front of a car and say that the car is an illusion, or jump from a 79 storey-high building! You'll surely die for sure!
The meaning of illusion here has a very profound and very deep meaning, which one should realise by oneself, and not ask questions because it is only you who can change yourself, not others. Please do understand this. It is of utmost importance to think, and not to question, because when questions arise, the tendency will be that you will not find any answer to your continous questioning.
Therefore, think by yourself. To realise that this world is merely an illusion, you must first ensure that everywhere is silent and relax on a chair as long as you can and do this daily. Put some relaxing music to enhance the process. Do not stress and no exertion please. Some people see many wonderful things, such as brillant lights and even God. The next step is to put your mind into what you are doing. That is you should your common sense. How?
Begin by first thinking 'everyone is born to die'. Is death the final anihilation of myself, i.e the ego? By the continuous process of thinking, you will come to know that you are something more than just this physical body, in which everyone experiences the objects of this physical world through the senses.
Then if you are interested, do ask for more.

Maya, in Hinduism, is many things. Maya is the illusion that the phenomenal world of separate objects and people is the only reality. For the mystics this manifestation is real, but it is a fleeting reality; it is a mistake, although a natural one, to believe that maya represents a fundamental reality. Each person, each physical object, from the perspective of eternity is like a brief, disturbed drop of water from an unbounded ocean. The goal of enlightenment is to understand this—more precisely, to experience this: to see intuitively that the distinction between the self and the universe is a false dichotomy. The distinction between consciousness and physical matter, between mind and body, is the result of an unenlightened perspective.

Maya is a fundamental concept that I attempt to live by. As I understand this Sanscrit word, it refers to the illusions that we, as third dimentional beings, perceive as reality. To get beyond reincarnating into this dimension, we have to learn how to overcome maya, the illusions created by our limited means of perceptions, understand how unimportant most things, that we perceive as important, truly are, live by important spiritual values and become one with our Supreme Being. This unity brings us back to who we truly are....a part of the ultimate spiritual unity that unties everything. This important concept acknowledges humans as spiritual beings, whose purpose on this level of existance is to perceive this spirituality, as opposed to beings born into original sin and needing to be "saved" by an external being. It is empowering and puts responsibility for our experiences directly upon our perceptions and not upon some external authority.
