Messi is an excelent player But we'll have to wait a couple of years to know how good he really is. Argentina had lot of players over the years with so much talent but after they turn 20, something happens to them. The last one is Sabiola, he looked a sure thing. He doesn't play half the potencial he had. The list is, sadly, very long. Remember Ortega?

I think Messi will be really good someday, but for now, there are better players on his team. I thought about Peckerman starting messi instead of several different midfeilders/forwards. First of all lets think about Riquelme. Riquelme can't be replaced in the argentine line up. While riquelme has not been putting up great numbers this world cup, he does a lot of things for the team that has no numbers. He controls the pace of the ball, and every scoring oppertunity goes through him. Next i thought about Maxi Rodriguez. Again i don't think messi would be a great exchange for maxi. Maxi hustles both up and down the feild, and has been making great plays both on offense and on defence. Messi tends to be completely offense minded, and stays up the feild almost exclusively. Keeping this in mind, I considered switching to a diamond midfeild, and subbing messi in in for either Cambiasso or Mascherano and playing him at attacking midfeilder. Argentina tried something similer in the first half of the mexico game with riquelme playing attacking midfeilder and mascherano playing left midfielder. This didn't work out very well and mexico had a lot of chances. In the second half of that game, they went back to the flat midfeild with Mascherano and Cambiaso in the middle and Riquelme on the left. They completely shut down the Mexico attack. As for Crespo, Messi is definitely not a good replacement for him. Crespo sacrafices his body to get the ball in the net. Every team needs a good power forward, and i don't see messi as a sutable replacement. Messi is unable to score a goal like the one Crespo scored to tie the Mexico game at 1-1. As for saviola, he is always running back to help the midfeild recover the ball, and him and Crespo play really well together. However, i could see somebody replacing him but its not Messi. I think Tevez would be a much better replacement for Saviola. Tevez is a fighter. He hustles 100% of the time, and fights everybody for the ball. His goal vs Serbia and Montenegro shows this vividly. He loses the ball twice in that goal, but recovers it and puts the ball away. The only problem with him is that he doesn't always know when to make the proper run. This is a skill Saviola has down to perfection. The goal he scored vs the Ivory Coast shows this clearly. In conclusion, while i do think Messi has a lot of potential, and is quite good, I agree with your freind that Argentina has a lot of better players right now. Messi is too young. In 4 years in South Africa that will be Messi's time to shine.
