This doesn't make any sense. Racism is about hatred of races. So if God created races, you should be bent on loving other races as a believer.
You ask what is wrong with replying to racists with racism. If you want a religious answer, ever heard of turning the other cheek? About Jesus saying No to "an eye for an eye"?
Also, you say men are expected to have some degree of toughness. By whom? And what does that even matter? You're only answerable to your God and yourself, not these people with these expectations.
And look at the insults from women? If women around you are permanently insulting you, maybe you should look closer at the people with whom you spend your time.

Using racial difference as a basis for hatred and acknowleding that someone is of a different race are separate issues. Unfortunately, one is so accustomed to hearing derogatory comments made about a person's race, that ANY comment is likely to be taken as a slight, if not directly insulting. None of us likes to feel different, though, and it is hard to comment on differences without making the other person feel uncomfortable.
People should be accepted for who they are and respected for their differences, whether they are men or women.
I think your action in replying to a display of racial hatred in similar terms was the right thing to do. You did it as an example, after all, not as a display of real animosity (that would have been quite evident at the time, I'm sure) and so it showed your tormentors a little of what it felt like. I think that was quite acceptable and I hope they learned their lesson.

Ok, so I ask you to look at the reason you want to be a racist and is it just to somehow make you feel better about yourself. I say if your belief is that God created race, do ya think He did it for the purpose to set one as better or higher than all or some of the other races? If he did then why? Do you think it is for the reasons it is used today?
"The term race distinguishes one population of humans (or non-humans) from another."1
"Racism refers to various belief systems maintaining that humans can be separated into various groups based on physical attributes and that these groupings determine or influence cultural or individual achievement or the essential value of human beings.
The word "racism" itself appeared in the 1930s, both in the English language and in French. This can lead to hostility against individuals based on a perceived or ascribed "race". Racism often includes the belief that people of different races differ in aptitudes and abilities, such as intelligence, physical prowess, or virtue. Most individuals who use the concept of racial categories believe that different races can be placed on a ranked, hierarchical scale. By definition one who practices racism is known as a racist.
W.E.B. DuBois argued that racialism is the belief that differences between the races exist, be they biological, social, psychological, or in the realm of the soul. He then went on to argue that racism is using this belief to push forward the argument that one's particular race is superior to the others." 1

You were fortunate that the derogatory comments ceased, and that things didn't escalate. Next time, don't let it bother you. It takes some time to be able to get to that point. By the other person making the derogatory comments, it shows how ignorant they are, and you shouldn't have to stoop that level. I think if you are confident of who you are, racial and gender, then other's opinions won't matter.

Because if you insulted them, you're just as bad as they were. And you don't have to be a sensitive little flower, people can be tough without insults or fighting. And I don't expect men to be tough, that is the man's decision.
