1. My father's advice which has helped me a lot: Do not translate.i.e. in your case do not formulate what you want to say in Kannada and them translate it in English. Think in English speak in English!
2. You need to pay attention to grammar. Wren & Martin's Grammar & Composition is an excellent book. This is available in revised edition. A book of keys to the questions is also separately available. ( The Publisher is : S.Chand & Company.)
3. Practice, Practice. Put yourself in situations where you have to speak in English. Start by making inquiries in person or on telephones etc. e.g Making a call to the call center of your Mobile service provider/bank/Travel Agents.
4. Make friends with persons with similar interests. But you need at least one mentor who is good in English and helpful.
5. Listen to Radio programs ( not TV) preferrably on BBC.
6. Try to improve your vocabulary. Make a habit of reading the Editorial of a reputed Newspaper( like 'Deccan Herald', 'The Hindu' in Bangalore ?)
7. Use a CD based dictionary like Oxford Advanced Lerner's. This gives examples along with meanings. This will help in problems related to pronunciation as well. ( Oxford Advanced Lerner's gives both British and American pronunciations.)
8. Although you are interested more in conversational English, it is better to have a general proficiency in English. So please read / write in English as much as possible. Try writing letters to Editors on topics that are dear to your heart. One of the ways to practice this is writing answers to questions at Yahoo Answers! ( Which is what I am doing right now!).BTW I am also an Indian and I also did my shooling in my mother tongue, so don't worry this is possible and if you follow my advice: hopefully enjoyable as well! Wish you all the best!!!

There are several ways to improve your spoken English. One, read everything you can get your hands on in English. It doesn't really matter what it is, find something in a subject you enjoy, that will ensure you actually DO it. Two, you likely have a basic understanding of the most important terms and phrases, but in order for you to brush up on colloquialisms, try watching daytime soaps (yep, that's right) with closed captioning on. This way, you can hear conversational English and read it at the same time, but more importantly, you will get to watch the body language that goes with it, something that reading alone misses, and hence see many of the nuances associated with American and/or English conversations (cynicisms and slang). And when you feel comfortable with it (like when you are alone), repeat whole sentences (having a pause/replay capability on your TV helps, you can rewind and replay it however often you wish till you get it down) as often as you can using the same tone and "voice".
As to the way your boss treats you, find another job! No person should be treated that way, and if you have a job you're good at, start looking for a new boss, someone who will value you for what you do and who you are, not belittle you for what you sound like.

I am an Indian too - and so, feel fully qualified to understand your problem, and answer you :
To speak and write well [correctly], you must first become very familiar with the language : And the best method for that is to read as much as you can, of the CORRECT kind of English...
The Readers’ Digest is best for your purpose - with its simple and contemporary [present-day] English, mostly written in a crisp ‘active’ voice.
Keeping a dictionary nearby, to check any word you do not understand, make it a point to read at least 2 articles every day - and then try repeating from memory [in English, of course !] whatever you had read.
Also keep a good book on English Grammar [Wren & Martin’s High School Grammar is possibly the best reference book - but I am told it is currently out of print, and available only in old-book shops !] handy - to spot-check and clear any doubts on Grammar.
The more you keep reading [next step : novels by British authors, whose English does not involve too much ‘slang’], the better will your vocabulary [range of words you know to use] be !
...At the same time, take steps to improve your pronounciation :
Get VCDs or DVDs of famous films like ‘My Fair Lady’ which highlight correct English pronounciation. See this film again and again, follow how the actors pronounce words, and try imitating them aloud : You will sound funny to even yourself at first - but [if you only do not give up midway !] after a few weeks, you will find that your accents and pronounciations, have certainly improved.
....The next step : record your speaking in English, and listen to it yourself. Try to find where all you had gone wrong, and make efforts to correct those mistakes...
...After about 3-4 months of continuous effort [not before that, please !], both your vocabulary and pronounciation will have become good enough - to give you the confidence to write !
...Do not think of writing as a ‘composition’ class in a school : Imagine that you are talking to a person sitting in front of you - and simply put down what you would have talked about in writing ! [As you should have adequate knowledge of spellings by now, this will not be too much of a problem !]
Now, read whatever you have written, aloud - and try to judge what SOUNDS RIGHT, and what does not. Try to find out what was wrong, by yourself, and correct it. Repeat this, until you feel satisfied with what you have written !
...Continue this process of reading, speaking, plus writing - while testing out your new talents, upon only your friends and family. Hopefully, there should be at least one person among them, who knows GOOD English - who will support your efforts.
...Self help, dear friend, is the BEST help : No amount of expensive ‘private tutions’, or ‘conversational courses’ given by so-called experts can help you - as only your will, and efforts can.
My Best Wishes to you.

Tell your boss that you know your communication could be better, and that you are working on it. Ask him not to criticize you in front of other people. Ask him for his advice on how to communicate better. He will see that you are trying to improve.
