The Stone Age is the longest period in man's history and probably spanned 2.6 million years after the last ice age. It is basically when man used only stone made items for his survival. The period is usually divided into 3 eras...the old stone age, the middle stone age (mesolithic) and the new stone age (neolithic). It should be noted that historians do not agree when the stone age officially ended since it varied in different geographic regions. The stone age is said to have ended when man begun using bronze (hence the bronze age). Iron was discovered a little later and ushered in the Iron Age.

The last million years, or half of the last ice age.
Stone blades (and fire) were made (by tapping flints together) by Homos habilis, erectus, neanderthalis and sapiens (humans). The Paeleolithic (old stone) is pre-human; the mesolithic is early human and the neolithic is from the end of the ice age (10k) to the start of bronze use around 5500 years ago.
The stone age is the end of pre-history; the bonze age is the start of "history". And before the stone age one might argue for a wood age, since thats largely what chimps beat intruders up with.
