Congress has been spending too much time focusing on so many non-issues like gay marriage and flag burning. What is wrong with these idiots who supposedly represent us?

Our borders are still not secure. Why don't they spend as much time on this issue as they do on gay marriage and flag burning? CHEAP LABOR perhaps? VOTE THEM OUT IN NOVEMBER!

They will find another diversion to avoid important issues. Remember this in November.

You are right. We all think burning the flag is wrong and disrespectful. I don't know of anyone that supports it. But this has worked out better than we think for the right. Just wait...they will use this to their advantage. This will be their campaign: "Republicans-voted to ban flag burning / Democrats-voted down the flag burning ban / Therefore, Democrats hate the flag and hate America...vote Republican." That is the reason they brought up the issue...so they can use it as a campaign tool in the mid-terms. Unfortunately, the Democrats aren't doing much to help themselves in the matter. They can ban flag burning without amending the Bill of Rights, but they aren't pushing for that as much as they should. The Republicans were smart for proposing an amendment the way they did, because they knew the Dems would vote it down. That way they could use it as I described earlier. Brilliant political strategy by some dirty politicians.

I agree that border security is more important right now as well, but you have to realize that the Congress must address all "scheduled" issues. There has been recent discussions in the both the House and Senate regarding immigration. Both parties have agreed to a later date as a Bill is formed and more information is gathered/researched.

It is well within their ability to address more than one topic at a time. Taking a vote on the flag burning legislation did not impede the immigration bill process...

I agree, Spike. Flag-burning is merely an expression of free speech. I don't care if gay people get married. What about the war in Iraq, gas prices, poverty, our environment, etc, etc, etc? The only reason they brought up gay marriage again is because mid-terms are coming up. The Republicans used the "gay marriage card" for a big advantage in 2004. Kissing the religious right's as*es has been terribly detrimental to our country since real issues get totally ignored.

In all honesty, politicians don't care about the country, they only care about taking office again. Why deal with important issues when you can take gay rights and stop the anarchists? Osama is nothing, just take more rights. Remember the Patriot act? More like the un-Patriot act. Ever heard of the 1st amendment? Totally opposite, as it is all for free speech. The Sedition act was also very anti-American, to say the least.

"Civil Rights, Women's Rights, Gay Rights, it's all wrong. Call in the calvary, disrupt this perception of freedom gone wild! Goddamnit, first one of 'em wanted freedom, then they all want freedom. Give 'em an inch, they'll take a mile." Gil Scott Heron, "Shogun to Rey-Gun"

Flag burning. No one cares, the only reason why it’s in the news is because the news is control by the Republican Conservative, and they don’t want you to know what is going on with the war and the death toll, I feel sorry for the people who think sticking to “Traditional values” will put us on top of the world, you know what they are wrong, we are being left in the dust, gas is up to $3.10, health care problems, Osama bin Laden who is that I forgot? We are killing women and children in Iraq, we took away running clean H2o in Iraq, we are killing these people slowly, “STAY THE COURSE” STOP FLAG BURNING AND BAN GAYS FROM MARRIAGE, don’t tell any one I remember Osama or they will put me a way in a cave and pump me with Conservative Traditional values by way of FOX NEWS, thanks you’re the best for not telling anyone.

As much as I know that legislation to protect our flag doesn't seem as important as most issues facing us, I am kind of glad that someone tries to protect it. I guess it's a sign of a free nation that flag burning is allowed, but I cringe when I see it here, and it infuriates me when it's done in foreign countries (many of which receive foreign aide from us to exist). I am sure they will try to move on to other issues now, but don't expect too much to be accomplished.

Wake up! Border security is not a burning issue. Stop being so afraid of the world outside.

The problem with an issue like that is that's what comes up during an election rather than focusing on the real issues which nobody seems to want to acknowledge.www.unity08.com

And you libs who are so against an amendment against burning the flag are THE FIRST ones who stand up and scream:

* "You CANNOT say Indian ... you have to say Native American." BTW - Indians laugh their @sses off at us over that one.
* "You CANNOT say black ... you have to say African-American."
* "Don't you EVER think about saying Merry Christmas ... you have to say Happy Holidays." BTW - don't you libs think it is a bit hypocritical that holiday is a conjunction of the words "holy day"?
* "You CANNOT say Chairman of the Board ... it is Chairperson of the Board."
* "You CANNOT say disabled ... you must say differently abled."

Get real. You guys on the left try to limit our speech on a daily basis, yet when it is something that offends YOU, it falls under the first amendment???

By the way - do you know where the term "political correctness" was coined? In Russia in 1917, Leninists (read: Communists) first coined the term to try to describe their utopian world. Makes you wonder, huh?
