A boro is a section of a larger entity. When people referring to South Attleboro, they are referring to a section of Attleboro. A township is a separate entity. In the case of some Midwestern and western states, a township refers to the original sectioning of the state when it was established. In that case some townships survive to the present day intact but others are townships in name only with few or no government functions.
