If your computer is connected to the net regularly then you must use the best Anti Virus Software.
Personally I have used Pc-Cillin, Norton, McAfee, AVG. But none of them were the best that I was looking for. So now I have F-secure Anti Virus software. This Anti Virus software is also used by Rediff.com, no doubt its the best one.
Norton & McAfee Anti Virus software take a lot of time for scanning the hardisk for viruses. Both of them take approximately 35 minutes or more for scanning 40GB hardisk, depending upon the extent up to which the hardisk is filled.
Last time I was using McAfee, surely its a nice one but sometimes it is not able to detect Trojans & spams from its own partners. My computer was infected with Trojan & McAfee was not able to detect it nor did Norton Antivirus.
F-Secure in my opinion is the best one, it has detected all the trojans. If you are interested then you can have a trail version, and if you are a Windows XP user then you can have it for free from the Microsoft Webpage. Just follow the link

I have been working with and repairing computers sence the TRS-80.
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (www.spywareblaster.com)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=staticcomp_za) or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have counteless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be tought in schools)

I've used this site for several years, and have NOT found anything better! I still haven't bought their product, because they offer a free, online scan, and it works wonderfully well!
Go to this page, scroll down to the bottom, and on the left, you can click a link that will scan your computer while you're online, and you can even continue browsing sites while it's going. And it's excellent! They update their library of viruses, bugs, etc. daily. And the cost if you decide to buy, is relatively cheap compared to others. And updated also every day, while you're surfing the net. Good luck!

Norton Antivirus. It offers a powerful anivirus solution so you can forget about viruses. You don't need an internet connection to update it. Just download the update file from somewhere else and install it on your machine.

Most of the software developer produces antivirus software and firewall software in bundle packages (Firewall is also important : to prevent other people, hacker to control or read your files on the pc)
