I'm interested in the procedures and start up equipment needed to host about websites for about 1000 users as a small business.

Thanks for the replies. Let me clarify. I'm not looking to start my own biz. I'm entering the field of server sales and need to find the what the basic set up is for someone wanting to host websites. Ya, I know server & periphials. But I don't know how much server is required. Do we need a web farm of blades or would one large server handle it? Would a SAN be best where one could slice & dice the storage at will or is that overkill? What type of software is required to establish the web connection. I know a firewall appliance with unlimited nodes would be needed but what other software/hardware would be needed for a basic start up structure. Thx.

Easiest is the following scenario.

One would usually contact a hosting center.
They have packages for this where you hire a server. They can provide management software to add sites, assign space and bandwidth. Most common is a PHP/MySQL setup, since this allows them to use widely available management software.

In this scenario you can do the buisiness you like: selling and/or building sites; they do what they are good at: maintaining the hard- and software.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* The Web Hosting Manager by Christoph Puetz
* Strategies for Web Hosting and Managed Services by Doug Kaye
* Setting up a Web Server by Simon Collin

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!
