In different forms of work: farming, ranching, sled dogs, guard dogs and coach dogs the perception of the owners has been that the dog will work the whole day without rest and still want to please their master and keep going. The well trained dog will work til the point of exhaustion if allowed to do so. They will keep going and that is what is meant by 'work like a dog'.
