Because of the way ISPs are currently set up, there will be firewalls and proxies in between you and the other person on IM. So it is very unlikely that you would be able to find their IP address. About the closest you could get is to the Yahoo server itself. But since they are on Yahoo IM, you already know they are on the Yahoo server.
Plus, most ISPs hand out IP addresses on a dynamic basis, meaning the the address may change each time a person connects to the Internet, or after a preset lenght of time (usually around 3 days). So even if you had the IP address they were using on Wednesday, it would be meaningless on Thursday. No way of tracing back to who had that address on Wednesday. So even if you had an IP address, it would be useless to track down who was using the IP. It might get you within a few hundreds miles of location (it came from Pennsylvania, not Utah) but that would be about it.
So, long way of saying, that even if you could get the IP of a person on IM (which you can't), it would be of little to no practical use.

Your IP -> ISP -> Yahoo Server -> ISP -> Their IP
So if there is any form of IP filter and/or firewall between all those points, then the IP reporting application may be giving you the last stop along the way.
So example if you were a hacker trying to send something directly to the other end user, you find a program that traces route (not traceroute) and gives you what it thinks is the IP for the other end. When actually if a hardware firewall on their ISP spoofing a IP for it's end users. And you attempt to send some virus.. now the ISP has you logged in the firewall with not only what you were trying to send, but the header of the packet.. where if you are not using someone elses connection they could literally show up at your front door if it was illegal enough.
And of course if they are trying to send bad stuff, contact the server(s) administration.
Hope this helps.

they might in user-friendly terms get the IP handle in case you linked to their pc at any time, e.g. by ability of ability of direct hook up with deliver data/photographs or linked by ability of ability of webcam. Then they might merely use the netstat command to confirm the IP handle and port linked. even nonetheless, some information superhighway agencies swap out your IP handle frequently, so do not difficulty lots.
