As other posters have said, looking up music academies or schools - or a piano teacher - in your area is the beginning.

You can help yourself if it is going to be a while before you have the chance to take up music studies. First, there are books that explain "music theory" so you can begin understanding the structure of music. You can buy an inexpensive electronic keyboard so that even without a piano you can pick out the basic lessons in beginner's lesson books. While you may not wish to learn piano - maybe you like the saxophone, or a Middle Eastern or Asian instrument, or what you really want is to SING! - this process helps you connect music theory with practice, trains your ear to recognize changes in pitches, and builds the foundation of your training.

Learning music by learning an instrument is an excellent way to do what you wish for. Besides specialty music academies, in most countries the local schools offer music programs (in the US, community colleges are an excellent resource), or you can engage a private eacher who specializes in the instrument you want to learn. Particularly in the case of music that uses different scales and conventions that Western music, you may be wisest to start with a teacher in the kind you like and want to learn.

And oh, by the way, it does not hurt at all to spend a lot of time listening to recordings of the very BEST performers in the "formal" styles of music you like. That means less pop and rock, and more of "classical," whether it is Western music, Chinese opera, or Middle Eastern forms (there are multiple variations).

Good luck and act on your dreams! Music is an eternal joy and comfort for your life.

Go to the phone book or place that has music like a music school or music class and tell the teacher you want to learn good music training or find one online.

I've always said that education is wasted on the young. When a person becomes an adult and realizes that s/he is interested in a particular topic or subject, then the person puts forth much more effort than if they had been forced to study the topic when they were younger. So many young people are forced to play an instrument and hate every minute of it....and quit. You on the other hand are an adult who realizes that you truly are interested in learning to play the piano. You will be more attentive to your teacher's instructions and will apply yourself to the task at hand. You have no aspirations of being a professional, so just master what you can and enjoy the experience.

How old are you?

School is cheapest, otherwise pick an instrument and take private lessons from an instructor.

Look up music stores near you- most have lists of teachers.

start with a musical tutor, because before you become a "musician" you need to know basic musical theory, and then you can find a voice or instrumental teacher.

good luck

buy some books on the instrument that you want to learn and go with it! or if you are still of schooling age, teachers are very willing to help students learn to play instruments and read music.
before you know it you'll be an old pro!
