I'd have to agree with ptdemon here, but I'd like to add a bit to it..

You could get a MP3 player (either iPod or another make they're all basically the same) and save your music onto their so that you can listen to your music where ever you go.

The PC slowness can be caused by a multitude of things.

- HD needs de-fragging
- you have unneccessary junk files.. try running 'Disk Cleaner' (press start > Run type in 'cleanmgr.exe' and let it run tick all the boxes and press OK) this will clear your HD and reclaim some lost space, and possibly speed up your PC too.

Just having a lot of music (or any files) won't slow down your pc if you aren't accessing the folder. If you listen do music while working your pc, you could copy favorite folders to another folder and play it from the 'new' folder so not to slow you down while accessing the selected songs.
A backup on disk or an external hard drive isn't a bad idea as losing 'a lot of music' could be very hard to replace in case of a crash.
Your 'slowdown' is caused by another reason: more info. is needed to help this problem.

An extenal USB is a good idea and they're fairly cheap these days, but if you've got tonnes of music you'll need USB2 ports to get the most out of it.
I'd suggest buying another HDD, a 200gig is not too expensive. Inside you're PC you should have a spare IDE port that you can plug it into. then just cut and paste the tunes over from your existing 'C' drive onto the new 'D' drive and hey presto, problem solved.
If in doubt consult an IT boffin. ;o)

if you really want to move the files either copy to cd/dvd or get a second HDD and copy across as mentioned in previous answers although this probably wont speed up your pc for that try defrag and scan disk then run antispyware and anti virus I use spyware doctor and Norton
if your running 2 or 3 programs at the same time this will slow your pc check your memory if 512mb or less get more at least 1gig

if its mostly music then i would suggest move it to a hard drive based music player like ipod etc, again depending on amount of hard drive space been occupied by music mp3's etc. if anything over 4 gb then i would advise you take a USB external hard drive.

hoe this helps.
