well,
Love is great song, and use some of the elements of the Beatles song "all you need is love"

In that song they use word play to suggest that all is possible for example.

"There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.

Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game

It's easy."

Lennon style depends on wordplay to break down distinctions between what love is in the physical and abstract.

In the Lennon song love, the same kind of word play is use to suggest that love is duplicity and reciprocal.

the lyrics suggest that love is dependent upon giving and receiving.
to want and give.
and finally accepting love.

I love that song!
I think "Love" shows John at his philosophical best.
To me he seems to just wrtie down what he felt in his heart at the time, very sensitive and understanding of the give and take of love, which gives the song a very circular theme.
Ex: Love is feeling, feeling love. Love is living, living love.

Yeah, it seems really deep and meaningful when you hear it the first couple of times, but after a while you start to realise that is just... words, you know. Meaningless stupid over the top big words.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big Lennon fan, I just don't particularly like that song.

What one? All you need is love?

He was rather cynical about love songs. So my bet is: If it is over the top it isn't because he was very in love.

i personally think he's talking about the opposite of free love. He's talking about the untouchable bond between two people and how all they need is the love from one another.

It means that you don't need religion or war you just need love
